New Dresser

Check out this fabulous new dresser that just arrived. It's a vintage piece from the late Sixties; solidly built but it needed an updated finish. We covered the dark wood in a coat of cream paint and distressed it a bit.

At 75" wide, it's roomy enough to stash all your stuff. While the perfect addition to any bedroom decor, it would also serve well as a sideboard in the dining room.

We have it priced at a very reasonable $275.

Soldering Surprises!

A few years ago I decided I wanted to learn the art of soldering charms. I purchased all the stuff and then proceeded to "torture" myself with my new soldering gun! In frustration, I stashed it all away until I found this gal on Face Book. Laurie, from Epiphanies of an Art Girl was offering a Soldering 101 class so I signed up pronto!

I am sharing one of my classmates blog posts about the class because I forgot to bring my trusty camera. Jennifer has a great blog, All Things Belle. Be sure to check it out!

I just discovered a great new shop in my Sugar House neighborhood. Unhinged carries apparel for men & women, jewelry & accessories, gift items as well as the occasional vintage find. Pictured is Corey Folster the proprietor of this cool shop. As Corey explains it, he spent years running shops for other people so he figured it was time to open his own. Corey's gift for visual merchandising is apparent. Unhinged has a fresh "Seattle" vibe that blends perfectly into this funky little Sugar House neighborhood. The merchandise mix includes handmade items, vintage clothing and unique brands including Cheap Monday, Naked & Famous Denim, Goorin Bros. and Alchemy Goods.

Meet our new babies.... They are our little "Pound Puppies", two sisters rescued from the animal shelter. They are a poodle/dacshund mix. Does that make them Doodles"? Pedigree doesn't matter...they are cute and we love them!

A New Shop in Town...

Today we will be visiting a lovely new shop here in Salt Lake City called Haight-Ashbury. It is owned by my friend, Cece. Here she is with her 3 daughters. They are such good little helpers around the shop.

As you can see the shop is stocked with beautiful and unique merchandise. Cece shops the flea markets in the San Francisco area for her goods. Since her husband owns a shipping company she has the benefit of getting her merchandise back to Utah free! Lucky lady.

Very Sad....

It is a sad week for our family. Our little Dacshund, Bumbee ruptured a disc in her back. Her back legs became paralyzed and surgery was not an option at this point. The vet said she may recover but after keeping her still and nursing her for a week her health deteriorated very quickly. She was in so much pain we felt it was best to put her to sleep at this point.

She was such a special little friend. The perfect pet. We will miss her.

Someone said that lighting is the "jewelry" of a room. If that's true, check out my brand new bling! My sweet Poopsie bought this chandelier for my birthday. It's so fabulous and it's not even real crystal. All the parts are acrylic and it's from the Home Depot!
In addition to the new chandelier Poopsie surprised me with these lovely red roses. Oh, Poopsie. I'm just swooning.

Vintage Goodness

This weekend Poopsie and I hit a fabulous estate sale.

The estate had belonged to a physician so there were some wonderful medical items like this scale...

...and this cool doctor's bag.

The basement of the home was stocked with vintage toys and boxes of old books. The books were being poured over by "book people" who seemed kind of grabby and hovering so we steered clear.

Poopsie flew into action and started scooping up the toys and making a pile. And excuse me for venting but what is it about a pile of items at an estate sale that is clearly "sold" that makes people start digging through said pile? It got so bad that Poopsie had to stand guard over the pile! Speaking of annoying behaviors, why do some people, upon entering an estate sale stand in the doorway, frozen like a deer in the headlights with their mouths hanging open, blocking the path for people trying to purchase items and move through said doorway? One more gripe and then I'm done. When attending an estate sale, please don't park your vehicle in the road, blocking all traffic. Park your car legally and then walk the distance required like the rest of us law abiding drivers. Okay. I'm done. Thanks for listening.

All of these items (and more) are now for sale in the shop. This one was lots of work but it's all for you....my wonderful customers. We do the work so you don't have to!

Our sunflowers grew to be about seven feet tall this summer (must be the chicken poop).

Yesterday we set up a booth at the Urban Flea Market at Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City. It's a fun new event going on once a month until October.

Cake Walk

It's time for the Cake Walk and Heather and I have prepared some yummy (and pretty) cakes for the occasion.

In keeping with this year's theme, "A Time for Service", vintage clocks were hung from the trees in the garden. So clever.

Carrie de Azevedo shows off her creation. This doll-house themed cake created quite the commotion once the Cake Walk began. Of course, everyone wanted to take this charming confection home.

My cute niece, Madeleine is the hostess of the festivities. All proceeds from the event will go toward her trip to Togo, Africa to work with the orphans there.

My sister Robin, always dresses for the occasion.

Dennis provides some old school Musak for the event. That Dennis is a real swingin' cat!

Around and around they go....who will be the next lucky winner?

Patio Spruce Up

It's June already and I had yet to spruce up the patio area. In my defense, we have had a very wet and cold Spring here in Utah so it has been a challenge to get out into the yard.

I have managed to collect several functional peices for my patio over the years in my junking travels. However, they lacked any unifying element and my patio resembled a yard sale. I picked up this table at an estate sale a while ago. It's got great bones but is so very brown.

A set of six stylish vintage chairs. Cute but so very beige.

This run of the mill redwood picninc table yearns for a makeover.

A set of two wonderful metal benches were a great steal at $10 each but could use some pizzaz.

My inspiration is the color in these "Country Living" outdoor cushions I picked up last Fall at K-mart for next to nothing. I love the greens and turquoise.

The reverse side is a cute striped pattern. Miss Galore likes the stripes.

I had a can of "Ooops" paint in my stash. It is an oil based exterior finish that I thought would be best for both tables. I used Krylon spray for the benches and chairs since it works well on metal.

I put together a few succulent planters to frame the patio. Love the low maintenance plants.

Gardening Therapy

With all the drama around here lately, I realized I was in need of some serious "Gardening Therapy". If you live here in Salt Lake City, you are aware that our Spring has really just been an extended Winter. We actually had one sunny day this week so I thought I'd better take advantage of the break in the rain and get out there and put some veggies in the ground.

Delusions of Grandma...

Perhaps you've noticed the lapse in my posting to this blog. Well, I have a really good excuse....you've heard that before.

I have just suddenly (and unexpectedly) become a grandmother. It's a long story but one with a happy ending. This has been one of those experiences that makes you realize that life does not always turn out the way you've planned but you try to make the best of things and move forward.

After all, I now have a beautiful new baby grand daughter.

Florida Keys

While in Florida visiting my daughter, Poopsie and I decided to take a drive down to The Keys. The drive from Ft. Lauderdale was well worth the 3 hour trip! The Overseas Highway, sometimes called the "Highway That Goes to Sea" is a modern wonder. The highway stretches out across the ocean for miles and takes you from the mainland all the way down to the southernmost island, Key West.

When we finally arrived in Key West we strolled though Old Town. It is such a charming little beachside community. You feel as if you have been whisked away to an island village somewhere in the Caribbean.

Crystal clear water...the perfect temperature!
Key West is the southernmost point of the continental U.S.A. In fact it is only 90 miles to Cuba.
Lovely European-inspired architecture along shady tree-lined streets.
Can I take this gem home with me....?

The Keys were originally discovered by Ponce de Leon in the 16th century.
Of course, this sign caught my eye.
Wild chickens roam the city parks freely.
Of course Key West was the home of some famous writers including Ernest Hemmingway and Tennesse Williams.

Me and my Poopsie by the sea...it just doesn't get any better!

Our New Sofa

For the past few months I've been looking for a new (used) sofa. I've been scouring the pages of KSL.com in search of the perfect piece. I knew I wanted leather but most of the leather sofas out there have those hideous gigantic "puffy" cushions...ick! I wanted something streamline yet comfy. So when I spotted this gem for sale online for $600,Poopsie and I hopped in the van and picked it up. The upholstery is a soft and buttery Italian leather and it's the perfect neutral shade for our home.
You can see why we needed to replace the old one. I love my kitty but she has such a destructive nature and I just can't bring myself to declaw her.
What a cozy spot for me to watch "Mad Men" episodes!

I found a pair of nesting boxes this past weekend. They are in great shape and appear brand new. So if you've decided to take the plunge and raise backyard chickens you are in luck!

Heirloom Makeover

When my Great Aunt Helen died several years ago I became the lucky recipient of this wonderful dining set. A shout out to my sweet sister Dana, for hauling it all the way back from San Diego for me! The set originally belonged to my Great Grandparents. I believe the Duncan Phyfe dining set was standard issue for all post-war middle class families. I enjoyed the set for years but lately it has felt just too dark for my current tastes. The chairs, after years of abuse from my teenagers, had become somewhat rickety. I love this set but I felt it needed a little updating.

I scored a set of contemporary chairs at the thrifts for a reasonable $8 a piece. The chairs are very heavy and sturdy but they needed to be updated. The size of these chairs is more suited to todays "larger" lifestyles. As for the original chairs I now use them in my craft room.

I selected a soft floral fabric, from my stash, for the seats. I also painted the wood a nice shade of cream.

Check out my (lack of) upholstery skills! Just a few wrinkles never hurt anyone!

I decided to paint the table white just because I always tell my customers they can mix white and cream.

Some folks would not be okay with altering a family heirloom. I think that it's more important to live with and enjoy family pieces. Where do you weigh in on the issue?

Sometimes I Get Lucky...

Last weekend, about a block from my house was the most awesome yard sale. I spent most of the weekend there. The guy just kept hauling stuff out to the sidewalk and I just kept buying it. I filled up my van three times! These items are now available in the shop. Call or e-mail for prices.

On a serious note, while chatting with the man selling items, I learned the owner of the house (a friend of his) had been evicted because he had been behind on the mortgage. He mentioned the poor fellow had some emotional problems and was a hoarder who had trouble keeping steady employment. It was a very sad story and I hope that he will pull through.

Hoarding is a serious emotional malady. As someone who frequents Estate Sales I have been a witness to some very disturbing situations. There is professional help available for hoarders.

So my gleefulness at finding such treasures is tinged with some sadness for this individual. Hopefully the proceeds from the sale will help him get back on his feet.

Excuses, Excuses...

It seems I've been suffering from a severe case of "Bloggers Block". No doubt, you other bloggers out there can relate. The first sign of this modern-day malady is a few days go by and you become aware that you have not posted to your blog. Before you know it the days turn into weeks and by then you fear posting because you realize that you've got some 'splaining to do, Lucy.

As far as excuses go, I've got an excellent one. There's a gaping hole in the ceiling of Second Hand Chic. It's all due to the wet weather we've been having lately (and my landlords {read slumlord} refusal to replace decrepit old roof). So you can see why I've been preoccupied.

We are calling it our "water feature".

Anyhow, the roof is being repaired and it's business as usual down at Second Hand Chic.

Things to do with an old Sewing Machine

Last week while visiting Miami we happened upon the most fabulous shop. All Saints Co. What's funny is that just the day before, my daughter and I found a beautiful old sewing machine at the swap meet. We agreed it was a great deal at $25 but "What do you do with it?" was the burning question. So then we came across this boutique in the Lincoln Road Shopping District that had hundreds of old sewing machines stacking the walls as a visual element. The affect was nothing short of stunning!

This shop was kind of a cross between early twentieth century sweatshop and a post industrial factory look with a cool steampunk twist. I think Anthropology has met its match!

Old theatre seating...very cool. Check out the patina on these leather seats.

The prices were absolutely insane, though. I think this little top my daughter is checking out is about $350!

Edgy looks...breathtaking displays.

Today we hit the Lincoln Road Flea Market in Miami Beach. It was a gorgeous day for outdoor strolling.

We decided to bring little Tizne along with us. He stayed nice and snug in his bag all afternoon.

There was a wide variety of fabulous goods but I felt the prices were a bit high. I guess this is the East Coast after all and things just cost more out here.

Great people (and dog) watching. Is it me or does this fellow resemble his dog?

This vendor was very friendly and had the best selection of vintage jewelry. Tons of Bakelight.

Great vintage shopping at Lincoln Road Flea market if money is no object.

I'm just happy I finally got to sample some Cuban Coffee. Delish!

Florida Thrifting

In between sight seeing (looking for gators) we have been hitting every the thrift store in the greater Broward County area. We have found some fabulous treasures as you can see. I even picked up a couple of inexpensive suitcases to transport everything safely back to Utah. I figured checking extra bags at $25 each would be cheaper than shipping them.

Today we plan to drive down to Miami and check out the thrifting action so there will be more to come.....

Things we did NOT buy at the Swap Meet....

While on vacation in Ft. Lauderdale we discovered the Swap Shop. They claim to be Florida's second largest tourist attraction. That's quite impressive considering Disneyworld is the largest. Hmmmm. The Swap Shop is open 7 days a week and sells everything you never knew that you needed. It's mostly cheap imported crappity crap but there are some garage sale type vendors out back so we decided to check it out. Maybe we will find the perfect vintage item amoungst the crap.

This masterpiece caught my eye but I had to pass because it wouldn't fit into the overhead compartment.

Not too many vintage items unless you consider this scary doll with evil red eyes from the Eighties "vintage".

Are leopard skin leggings appropriate attire for a woman in her early fifties?

And finally, for those days when your butt just isn't big enough, these special booty-enhancing panties are just the ticket. I don't think I've EVER had one of those days!

Well, our visit to the swap meet was fruitless yet entertaining. We plan to hit some thrifts today so hopefully we'll have some real treasures to share with you next time.

Lisa's House

While we are staying in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, we drove up the coast to visit my brother and his wife. They live in a very charming little beach town called Stuart. My sister-in-law Lisa has always had the best taste. This was our first visit to her home in Florida and it was just as cute as I imagined it would be. Take a look...

I am loving the bleached wood on the walls. Such a beachy feeling.

Her collection of original artwork is quite enviable.
Lisa actually made this lovely shell mirror! So talented.

This little dresser has always been a favorite of mine. She found this years ago at the thrifts when she lived in Utah.

This Just In....

I had planned to attend an estate sale this AM but since we were slammed with about twelve inches of snow the night before I figured it was not a good day to hit the road. I thought it best to work on a few projects in the safety of my own driveway.

I just finished refurbishing this sweet little vanity and it will be on its way to the shop as soon as this photo session ends.
I should have snapped some "before" shots but my weekends are so frantic around here that sometimes I just can't fit it all in! I did a simple spray and chip paint job.
The seat was covered in a hideous black faux fur fabric. It reminded me of a dead muppet. I also replaced the foam seat because I suspect it came from a smoker's home. This is some vintage fabric I had in my stash.
Check out our lovely Utah weather in the backdrop...good thing I'm leaving for Florida this week!

Estate Sale Finds

Here are a few of the items I scored at an estate sale this weekend. The sale started at 9 am and I was there on the hour but most of the furniture was already marked "sold". Hmmmm. Anyhow, the house was packed with people and I was not in the mood for crowds so I quickly grabbed some items and got into the check out line. Going to these sales is sometimes an exhausting ritual.
The best find of the day was this adorable little child's hutch. It's in mint condition.
Cub Scout book, tin and yardstick.
You know I can't resist old paintings...so charming.
Crochet doll dresses. These will need a good soaking.

Cute fifties toy chest. Has a few nicks in the vinyl but I could not resist those studs!
Of course, I am powerless to resist any chicken items!
This piece is not vintage but elephant items always are good sellers in the shop.
Blue Boy prints seem to do well, too.
A set of milk glass lamps. So sweet for a little girls room.
And lastly, I love these old art instruction manuals. I can just picture the bored and frustrated fifties housewife who perhaps was seeking more fulfillment than her domestic existence could provide for her. She longed to try her hand at painting. Maybe she did the landscape pictured above. After completing the work she proudly showed her husband. Hopefully he was pleased and displayed his approval.

I guess that is what draws me to these sales. There is a certain voyeuristic appeal to rifling through a complete strangers personal affects and imagining what their everyday life was like.

All of these items will be available for purchase in our shop this week.

Here is a fun and easy craft project for you to try. Ever wonder what to do with all those random pieces of broken jewelry that you just can't bring yourself to throw away? I'm kind of a hoarder when it comes to bits & bobs of the sparkley variety.
I copied these vintage images from a photography book. I suggest going to the office supply store and have them professionally copied.

Dollar store frames and some jewelry glue. E-6000 is my favorite.
Glue your jewelry onto the edge of the picture frame. It's fun to use color found in the photo. This is such a quick and simple project...have fun!!
