But what elevates the mundane item to something marvelous? The grouping of similar objects always adds impact. Try this trick with the stuff around your house. It's fun and it won't cost you anything!

Oh Pioneers!

Now that the Fourth of July is over with, we can concentrate on the really important holiday here in Utah: the 24th of July. If you are not from these parts, the 24th of July commemorates the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley in the year 1847. Pioneer Day festivities include the Days of '47 Parade, picnics, rodeos and of course, fireworks. Some would say the holiday is celebrated with more zeal than even Christmas. The importance of a holiday can be measured by the number of people ending up in the E.R. Judging by the amount of firecracker noise and subsequent "hootin' and hollerin'" on the evening of the 24th compared to that on the 4th, I would wager that the 4th pales in comparison.

Second Hand Chic will be closed on Friday, the 24th. We will reopen on Saturday, July 25th at 10 AM. We hope you all have a fun yet safe holiday with family and friends.

A Happy Accident

It's Monday morning and I am feeling so very grumpy and unmotivated. After staring at my computer screen for an hour I decide it's time to get up off my chair and start moving about. I glance out the front window and behold this amazing sunflower in full bloom in my front yard. The truly remarkable thing about this sunflower is that we did'nt plant it. My husband feeds the birds in the yard and this flower was the serendipitous result of a stray seed. It was a happy accident. Of course, I seize the photo op immediately. As I was snapping some shots, this adorable little bee stopped by.

I am no longer feeling grumpy.

A Walk on the Wild Side

Sometimes a gal needs to take a break from junking and get out into the wilderness. Here in Salt Lake City, we are fortunate to have such easy access to the mountains. The mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon is a mere 20 minutes from our front door. In less than half an hour you can leave behind the city and find yourself in a splendid natural setting.

Today, John and I escaped to these beautiful surroundings. After a yummy brunch at the Alta Lodge, we were hiking amoung these amazing wildflowers and quaking aspens.

Due to the wet spring we had here in the Wasatch Front, the wildflowers are especially spectacular this year.

After spending the afternoon amoung all this sublime scenery, I feel refreshed and ready for another work week.

The Story of Stuff with Annie Leonard

I always look forward to MaryJane Butters column in the Sunday newspaper. Today's topic was "Going Green" by shopping less and buying used. Buying used items is a great way to shrink your carbon footprint. MaryJane points out that every brand new product we buy comes with a hidden rap sheet of natural resource extraction, fuel usage, chemical conjuring and pollution effects. When we make it a priority to buy secondhand items we are not supporting the manufacture and long-distance transportation of so much unnecessary stuff. Check out the 20 minute video, "The Story of Stuff". It's a real eye-opener. We need to be aware of how the simple act of shopping effects our environment. On a lighter note, buying secondhand is just plain fun!
