Kill Your Lawn

Okay, it's time for anual rant on the importance of sustainable landscaping. When Poopsie and I bought our home six years ago the first order of business was to kill the lawn. Not only are lawns big water-wasters but the mowing and fertilizing of America's lawns are ruining the environment. Check out this article in The New Yorker. Here in Utah, with its dry climate it's impossible to have a beautifully lush lawn during the dog days of summer. We have watered the yard twice so far this summer and it looks much nicer than our neighbor's lawn. He is out there everyday with the hose by the way. This water-wise landscaping is not as complicated as it looks, either. Since I'm a lazy gardener, I just dumped a truckload of dirt on top of the old lawn and started from scratch. I planted quaking aspen, yarrow, rosemary, dayliles, lavender, cat mint and salvia. We found some rock up in the canyons for the path, threw in some poppie seeds and oila!

The bees really love the lavender, too.

Yee Haw!

If you live here in Utah then you are aware that the Fourth of July Holiday is only the beginning of the month long celebration. July 24th is the really big holiday around here. It commemorates the day in 1847 when the Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Some say it is celebrated with even more hoopla than the 4th. In any case, July is the month to "get your cowboy on".












As you can see, Second Hand Chic is well stocked with whatever you need to get in touch with your inner cowboy (or girl).

This Is Not Your Mother's Hula Hoop

The Hula Hoop® toy is the most popular American toy ever made. It is a brightly colored hoop of plastic which is rotated round and round the body by moving the hips. The toy was introduced by Wham-O Manufacturing in 1958. It cost $1.98, and it was so popular that stores kept running out. In the first six months, Americans purchased 20 million Hula Hoop® toys. In 1958, 100 million were sold worldwide. All over the United States, people held Hula Hoop® contests to see who could spin the longest.

That was then, this is now. It seems the new generation has discovered the hula hoop. Here is a photo of my daughter Heather at the Project Earth Music Festival in Minnesota.

This is definately NOT your mother's hula hoop.

Holiday Weekend

Just a reminder that due to the Fourth of July Holiday falling on Sunday, Second Hand Chic will be closed all weekend. We will open again on Tuesday, July 6th.

Summer Whites

Well, July is here and it's hotter than a flicker's nest! That's a funny expression my mom used to say. It's time to lighten things up around the house.
