Every Saturday and Wednesday (and pretty much every other day of the week) in downtown Hilo, local farmers set up their stalls offering fresh produce and flowers to the public.
You will find a variety of local fruits and vegetables for sale at very reasonable prices.
There is also an offering of prepared foods and baked goods.
You can see why they call this star fruit.
These lovely orchid plants sell for a mere $8! I wish I could take some home with me.
These flowers arrangements were only $5! Can you imagine!
Can anyone name this mysterious fruit?
Thanks for coming along with me to the Hilo's Farmer's Market.
Love, Kelly
I love that market! We went several years ago and got some awesome produce and tasty veggie wraps. It's just so tropical and lovely!
ReplyDeleteMystery fruit....lychee! We bought some and when you get through the weird covering the fruit is white and pops out like an egg. Kinda good, kinda odd.
Ah ha! Yes, lychees. My neighbors, who are originally from South Africa (another Tropical local) shared lychees with me this summer.

Wonderful pictures. Thanks Kelly!
ReplyDeleteAfter further research I discovered the name of the last fruit is "Rambutan".
ReplyDeleteThanks for playing!

Don't you just love a good farmer's market! Visiting one in Hawaii takes the cake! Those avocados look great and I can't believe the orchids are only $8...
ReplyDeleteFarmers Markets are the best! The food always tastes so much better.
ReplyDeleteLovely pics! Not lychees tho...they are rambutans :-)
