This Is Not Your Mother's Hula Hoop

The Hula Hoop® toy is the most popular American toy ever made. It is a brightly colored hoop of plastic which is rotated round and round the body by moving the hips. The toy was introduced by Wham-O Manufacturing in 1958. It cost $1.98, and it was so popular that stores kept running out. In the first six months, Americans purchased 20 million Hula Hoop® toys. In 1958, 100 million were sold worldwide. All over the United States, people held Hula Hoop® contests to see who could spin the longest.

That was then, this is now. It seems the new generation has discovered the hula hoop. Here is a photo of my daughter Heather at the Project Earth Music Festival in Minnesota.

This is definately NOT your mother's hula hoop.

Love, Kelly

  1. It sure isn't my Momma's hula hoop... I passed a park yesterday and saw 5 women hula hooping and it was maybe the sexiest thing I'd ever seen in my life. Like the car washing scene from Cool Hand Luke. I'm all for getting the secret out there... 3. I once entered a childs hula hoop contest when I was 7 and was really good at it. I did not win but I felt like a winner just being in the contest. Great days gone by..
