Living an Athentic Life

If you have thumbed through any decorating magazines lately it's hard not to notice the "Shabby Chic" look that is so fashionable right now. Popularized by lifestyle guru Rachel Ashwell, it's a rustic, lived-in flea-market inspired look characterized by tables with chippy paint, rusty metals, faded fabrics and mismatched china. I can't help but see the irony in purchasing a simple wooden painted chair from Rachel's Los Angeles boutiques for $200 in order to acheive a down-to-earth look in your home. Besides, you can buy the same chair in my shop for $20.

Check out the humble dwelling pictured above. This is the home of my daughter Heather who recently moved to Maui. Talk about shabby chic! To Heather, shabby chic is less of a fashion statement and more of a way of life. At the age of 19 Heather is finding her authentic self. She is living her life on her own terms even if it means living in a shack with no electricity or running water. She has never been happier.

It's important to choose your own path in life. Her sister, Emily chose college in Portland but Heather's intuition guided her to this rural setting. She wakes to the sounds of nearby roosters crowing and has to haul her own water from a spicket down the road. She is fashioning a life that is in harmony with what is important to her.

So good luck, Heather on your journey of life and remember we love you.

Aloha, Kelly
